Sultan: Don't politicise or sensationalise issue

SHAH ALAM (Jan 6, 2011): The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, does not want the issue of the new state secretary’s appointment politicised or blown out of proportion.

Speaking publicly for the first time since the controversy over the appointment of Datuk Mohd Khusrin Munawi as state secretary broke on Dec 27, he said the issue should not be politicised or sensationalised as it would cause confusion among the people.

Mohd Khusrin’s appointment by the Public Services Commission had become a contentious issue as Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim objected, saying the state government had not been consulted and his office had submitted three other names to the palace for approval.

Speaking at a ceremony at Istana Bukit Kayangan today after Mohd Khusrin took his oath of allegiance to the sultan and to serve the state with obedience, loyalty and honesty, the Sultan expressed regret that what he had said recently had been manipulated by certain "irresponsible" quarters, causing confusion among the people in the state.

He said that the ruler had given his consent to the appointment as it was in accordance with the constitution and conventions of the state.

Stressing that he is apolitical, the sultan today said he had advised Mohd Khusrin to implement policies of the government of the day in accordance with the rules and regulations.

"My expectations of the new state secretary are for him to discharge his duties and responsibilities well," said the sultan, who also commanded all state government officers to give their co-operation to Mohd Khusrin on matters of administration to ensure things ran smoothly.

"The contributions and responsibilities for the development and progress of our beloved state are very important to the welfare of the people.

"My only desire is to see Selangor which I love, always in peace and its people, regardless of race and religion live in harmony and always cooperating with each other," said the ruler.

"If the state is peaceful and all parties carry out their duties with honesty, transparency and commitment, then the development and progress will be achieved and enjoyed by its people," said the Sultan.
