1 Malaysia..lets revise it to Satu Malaysia Menuju Visi 2020

Our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said today that he acknowledged Vision 2020 introduced by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as a national vision and was committed to achieving it.

Bernama have it here.

Vision 2020 A National Vision - Najib

KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said he acknowledged Vision 2020 introduced by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as a national vision and was committed to achieving it.

"I would like to stress that although Vision 2020 was the brainchild of Tun Mahathir, we have accepted it as a national vision and whoever succeeded him (Mahathir) is committed to achieving Vision 2020," he said when answering a supplementary question from Senator Muhamad Yusof Husin at the Dewan Negara here Monday.

Vision 2020 was launched by Dr Mahathir, the fourth prime minister, when he tabled the Sixth Malaysia Plan in 1991 in the pursuit of turning Malaysian into a developed country.

Najib said the projected six percent economic growth rate yearly could be achieved due to strong internal and external factors."If external factors are weak like in 2009 when financial crisis hit the world, it will be difficult for the country to achieve a high growth rate."Therefore, we assume that we can achieve at least six per cent economic growth, and based on our estimates, if we can achieve six per cent growth rate every year until 2020, we can attain a developed nation status.

"If something happens beyond our expectation, let say a prolonged global crisis again, this will certainly lead to adverse effects on us in our quest to achieve our goal and dream, that is Vision in 2020," he said.

Meanwhile, Najib said he was ready to accept views from any quarters, including Dr Mahathir on how to achieve Vision 2020.Najib assured the people of Sabah and Sarawak that they would also be part of the developed country status as additional allocations would be provided to offset the infrastructure and rural development imbalance with the peninsular.

And then, this is what Former Finance Minister and UMNO Treasurer, the indomitable Ku Li who came within a hair's breadth of becoming Malaysia's Prime Minister in 1987, has to say about PM Najib's 1 Malaysia:

Vision 2020 ‘inspired’ more confidence than 1 Malaysia: Ku Li

By Shazwan Mustafa Kamal July 19, 2010(MI)

KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 – Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamed’s Vision 2020 inspired more confidence among Malaysians as opposed to Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1 Malaysia, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said in a rare compliment for his long-time political rival.

The Kelantan prince who once challenged Dr Mahathir for the Umno presidency claimed that compared to Vision 2020, the prime minister’s ambitious 1Malaysia was “hollow” and lacked a cohesive policy to support a long-term goal.

“When Dr Mahathir positioned a vision of 2020, the vision, its idea gives people hope.

“1Malaysia is hollow, it must have a policy to go about it, to support it. Only then will people get involved in it,” said the Gua Musang MP.

Tengku Razaleigh told The Malaysian Insider in an exclusive interview that although Najib was earnest in trying to provide a stable leadership for the country, there were also insurmountable obstacles stopping him from doing that.

“I think he is earnest in wanting to provide (a) leadership for the country, but he also has problems which are insurmountable,” added the Umno leader popularly known as Ku Li.

“There is no concerted effort by the government, 1Malaysia does not excite people. We already have the federal constitution which is supposed to unite everybody.

“We don’t have a clear policy that will generate support. You want a proper economic model, you want support on (a) federal (level), go out and concentrate on something concrete,” he said.

The former finance minister lambasted Najib’s current Cabinet line-up consisting of leaders which did not follow the Prime Minister’s goals and visions.

“There is a gap between Najib and Umno party members… he probably has not done enough to forge a relationship with the members.

“He means well when he goes down for his walkabouts, like how he went to Petaling street. But how many people (Malaysians) live in Petaling Street? Its full of foreigners,” quipped Tengku Razaleigh.(More walking for PM Najib now, I hope he is as fit as a fiddle)

I wonder how things would have been if Ku Li had been our Prime Minister replacing Dr Mahathir, having read the speeches and writings by Ku Li, I believed that Malaysia's history could have taken a very different path from what it is now.

Alas, Ku Li is already 70, his time in the sun has come to pass. However, many of his ideas are worth a second look by PM Najib and the powers that be though. PM Najib should embrace and engage with Ku Li, the late Tun Razak has very high regards for Ku Li and what he has done for Malaysia. He does not talk nonsense that is for sure.

There is some points that is worth looking, like when Ku Li was reported to have said:

“When Dr Mahathir positioned a vision of 2020, the vision, its idea gives people hope"

“1Malaysia is hollow, it must have a policy to go about it, to support it. Only then will people get involved in it,”

Yes very true, people need hope that's the key, when we have hope we do not despair but work hand in hand towards our goal.

Actually the truth is the meaning of 1 Malaysia is not really being consistently explained with some groups hijacking it for their own ulterior motives much like the Islam Hadari during Abdullah's time.

This is my free unsolicited view, the PM might like to have a look at the 1 Malaysia slogan again and modify it to suit, as such:

Satu Malaysia Menuju Visi 2020

Malaysians Together Striving Towards a Common Vision 2020.

Baru ada isi, ada oommph! PM Najib happy, Dr Mahathir Happy, Ku Li Happy, I hope everybody else happy. Just my thought...
