Pua admits ‘contradiction’ over Selangor support letters
By Shazwan Mustafa Kamal August 06, 2010

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 — Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua admitted today a “contradiction” between the Selangor government’s stand on recommendation letters and that of top Pakatan Rakyat (PR) state leaders existed.

On Wednesday, Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said that state assemblymen and MPs may continue to issue letters of recommendations and support letters despite calls from PR leaders like Pua for its eradication.

“I agree with Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz’s criticisms concerning Selangor’s stand on support letters...it does contradict the views of Pakatan leaders in the state.

“I admit, as a result of this the current situation also makes me look stupid.. I don’t mind facing facts, eating humble pie,” said Pua.

The DAP man was referring to Nazri’s claims that the Selangor government’s decision on keeping the practice of recommendation letters contrasted Pua’s own views.

Nazri said yesterday that the current situation made Pua look “stupid.”

But Pua maintained that he did not agree with the state government’s decision, and said that he would raise the matter at the “next given opportunity.”

“We have to pull in more efforts to convince the Selangor government to do away with support letters.

“Look at Penang. They practice an open tender system, and they don’t have a problem. Ideally, we should be able to pull off something similar here in Selangor,” Pua told The Malaysian Insider.

The DAP national publicity secretary claimed that there was a misunderstanding on the push for eradication of recommendation letters.

“Support letters for contracts, government deals should be done away with...but support letters for the purpose of welfare, it should not be a problem. On that note, it is not an issue. The contention is only on the usage of these letters to get contracts, which is open to abuse,” added Pua.

He said that he would also raise the matter during DAP’s state executive committee meeting scheduled for August 12.

In a related development today, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng confirmed that the island state’s elected representatives did not issue business recommendation letters for government procurement deals as contracts were obtained through an open tender system.

Selangor Speaker Teng Chang Khim recently admitted that all Selangor PR assemblymen, including himself, had issued letters of recommendations for government contracts to contractors and the public.

Really its not everyday that a politician from Malaysia's only self appointed holier than thou party namely the DAP that would concede that he is contradicting himself and having to eat humble pie by a member of the auld enemy, a BN Minister no less.

Looks like the CAT(Continuously Avoiding Truth) State Government of Pulau Pinang Ketua Menteri YAB Tuan Lim Guan Eng also men-celah and say that his state Government representatives do not issue such letters as the state Government practise open tender system. Yeah right, but Tuan Guan Eng conveniently forgot to mention that he is CHAIRMAN of the tender Board so who would dare write a letter of support. Read this juicy expose here;
Zahrain: Lim is a Dictator.

But Tony don't lose heart, I must say you have more courage than the Supreme DAP leader and his heir apparent son put together. You will go far, but not sure whether you will go the way of Tan Sri Lee Kim Sai, Fan Yew Teng or even Wee Chee Keong, though.
