I have always thought that the former Petronas Chief Hassan Merican at the peak age of 57, with his immense talent and high integrity is not ready for retirement, he should have been invited by PM Najib to do other work for Malaysia in another official capacity before he is enticed to go overseas where his exceptional managerial abilities are recognised. If Idris Jala formerly of Shell can be given a Minister's Post when he did not really performed that well in MAS, why can't Hassan Merican be recognised as such.
On 15 June 2010 events are moving for Hassan Merican when he accepted Temasek owned Sembcorp invitation to become independent Director, read here.
Sembcorp Industries is pleased to announce the appointment of Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican as independent director with effect from June 16, 2010.
The President & CEO of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) from 1995 until his retirement in February 2010, Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican brings to the board over 30 years’ experience in audit, accounting and management. He currently serves as a Director of International Centre for Leadership in Finance.
Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican holds a Honorary Doctorate from the University of Malaya and is a Fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Eddy,
Good recommendation. The man has vast experience and should be good for Sime but Najib may have other candidate in mind
Bro HL, Khazanah Nasional and the Big GLC's such as Sime Darby is really in need of the "few good men" such as Tan Sri Hassan Merican to lead them. No need to search for talent from overseas who does not know our culture and our politics.
I hope PM Najib listens to voices of the people on the streets.
a lost to our country
we are familiar with Hassan. He will NEVER EVER kow tow to politics in discharging his duties as an executive. He is a superb character of a person with extreme management experience. No point 'transferring' him to other GLC as he still have to kow tow to ROSMAH. His top skils are of better value to other high growth global outfits. I wish him all the best in Sembcorp. Ironically, his skills will pose a long term problem to PTP....as he was privy to Malaysia's inner workings...
